Job Summary: Pediatric Registered Nurse provides comprehensive, high-acuity nursing care to pediatric patients from birth through 18 years of age, including postoperative and medically complex cases. This role involves advanced patient assessment, medication administration, infection control, clinical documentation, emergency response, and coordination of care with interdisciplinary teams while serving as a patient and family advocate.
Required Qualifications:
- Degree/Education: Associates of Science in Nursing. Graduate from a college or university accredited by National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC), or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
- Certifications:
- Advanced Life Support (ALS)
- Basic Life Support (BLS)
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
- Licensure/Registration: Current, full, active, and unrestricted license to practice as a Registered Nurse as required.
- Experience: Two years of experience in nursing in the past 4 years with family practice or pediatric primary care nursing experience. Pediatric nursing is preferred.
Key Responsibilities:
- Performs critical care duties to include assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating age specific nursing care across all ages.
- Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of the interrelationship of body systems in maintaining and restoring health.
- Shall provide labor intensive care to a variety of patients with numerous complex medical and surgical pathologies.
- Observes, assesses, and records symptoms, reactions, and progress; assist physicians during treatments and examinations; administer medication; administer prescribed treatments, completes admissions and discharges, and promotes convalescence and rehabilitation.
- RNs are responsible for monitoring and interpretation of collected data by the LPNs and unlicensed assisted personnel, informing the medical staff as appropriate.
- Functions as a patient advocate.
- Assesses patient/family knowledge level, develops, and implements a plan of instruction and documents demonstrated level of understanding.
- Assessment plans will be targeted at age specific needs. Each nurse will manually and/or electronically document all patient care given and the progress of the patient utilizing the Department of Nursing documentation standards in the patients' medical record.
- Provide comprehensive professional nursing care to pediatric patients from ages 1 day to 18 years of age.
- Experience caring for postoperative patients.
- The RNs are responsible for pediatric patients throughout tour of duty and have extensive knowledge and experience and have the skill for concentrated effort and self-motivation to carry out patient care requirements.
- Initiate intravenous lines as ordered and obtain blood samples for lab and chemistries and other specimens, as ordered.
- Evaluate, observe, document and report patient signs/symptoms and response to therapy.
- Initiates infection control techniques when caring for all patients but especially for Immune-compromised.
- Monitor blood pressure, respirations, temperature, and weights.
- Set up oxygen tanks/wall oxygen and monitor patients while on oxygen.
- Medication will be administered using the “five rights” and medications shall be administered within the scope of nursing practice and include intravenous, subcutaneous, oral, transdermal, rectal, and intramuscular.
- Uses current resources to research medications prior to administration.
- Anti-cancer chemotherapy drugs are excluded unless contract employee has obtained appropriate documented education in cancer chemotherapeutic drugs and administration.
- Insert urinary catheters using aseptic techniques.
- Perform dressing changes/minor wound care, splinting and operate patient care equipment.
- Initiate life-saving measures in the absence of a physician to the contract employee’s level of training.
- Ensure that the rooms are cleaned and stocked between patients.
- Shall assure content and correctness of all prepared reports and shall sign the document to validate its contents.
- Submit prepared documents before the end of assigned shift.
- Operates emergency equipment including, but not limited to defibrillator, EKG machine, cardia monitor, and other equipment determined by MTF, unit and position. Depending on position and protocol, may serve as member of Rapid Response Team or emergency code team.
- Performs a vast array of direct patient care procedures to include but not limited to range of motion exercises, lifting, turning, transporting and positioning patients, personal hygiene care, changing linen and clothing and feeding patients.
- Plans and implements care with the collaboration of other healthcare providers.
- Calls report to the appropriate unit/ward and provides pertinent data such as surgical procedures performed, patient problems, nursing diagnosis and actions, patient response, specialized care and equipment necessary to support the patient.
- Responsible for quality assurance/risk management and responds to breaches of standard procedures which compromise the patient or staff members.
- May also serve as a project officer for select committees and participate in research projects that are consultative in nature and involve shared information or data gathering for new or existing technologies.
- Assesses patient’s conditions for potential or life-threatening crises and can distinguish between normal and abnormal physical findings; initiates life saving measures in the absence of a physician.
- Knowledgeable of the pharmacology of most commonly used emergency drugs, anticipated results, usual dosages, and their location on crash cart.
- Operates emergency equipment: defibrillator, EKG machine, cardiac monitor, and other equipment as determined by MTF, unit and position.
Work Environment & Schedule: Sunday to Saturday 4,8- or 12-hour shifts, Maximum 40 hours per week
Compensation & Benefits: Up to $ 63.50 per hour + H&W
